It is one of those catch 22 questions. The thing is that body and mind are connected.

It has been proven long time ago that people suffering from mental illnesses are in a greater risks of physical diseases,

and vice versa the people suffering from physical chronic conditions (such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases) are in greater risk of depression and other mental health issues:

I wish more people embrace the fact that there is no artificial separation between the body and mind. The mind is in the brain and the brain is part of the body, there is no separation, the health of the body is going to affect the health of the brain. The brain needs neurotransmitters (such as serotonins and dopamine) to work correctly, neurotransmitters are developed in our gut. It means that if your gut doesn’t work properly your brain won’t be as well.

Scientists in the late 1950s first proposed the idea that mental health conditions are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Research at the time had focused on the role that chemicals in the brain play in depression and anxiety.

These researchers hypothesized that lower than normal levels of neurotransmitters can lead to symptoms such as:

    • feelings of sadness, helplessness, worthlessness, or emptiness
    • overeating or loss of appetite
    • insomnia or sleeping too much
    • restlessness
    • irritability
    • a feeling of impending doom or danger
    • lack of energy
    • distancing yourself from others
    • feeling numbness or lacking empathy
    • extreme mood swings
    • thoughts of hurting yourself or others
    • being unable to carry out day-to-day activities
    • hearing voices in your head
    • alcohol or drug misuse
    • an inability to concentrate

Taking above into account I would say that you should start with getting your body in shape as only by creating a solid physical base you will be able to work on your mental wellbeing. Proper nutrition and regular exercise can enhance the work of self-help tools such as meditation and breathwork.

In today’s world, in order to be happy it is really important to keep ourself updated with the going trends and stay fit and healthy.

But to be happy we first need to have coordination between a healthy mind and a healthy body. These two are interdependent terms. A healthy mind means a positive attitude towards life, which increases the oxygen level in the body and increases the blood circulation it helps keeping a person energised.

A energetic and enthusiastic person will also make sure that he/she is physically healthy to keep himself focused and determined towards life goals. Exercising regularly and eating healthy are two basic need of todays living as it keep the satisfaction level high and a person feels youthful.

“A sound mind in a healthy body” is the key to happy life.

I personally believe, that positive mind keeps me motivated towards my goals and this positive attitude motivates me to stay fit , healthy and focused.

A healthy mind makes a healthy body so it is important to keep your mind in check first, if you are mentally fit you can conquer the world’s happiness. To have a healthy mind all you need to do is:

    • Stay away from negative people
    • Think positively
    • Meditate for atleast 20mins .

This is all you need to do for your brain exercise. Your mind is the part of your body so keep it healthy and automatically you will be encouraged to keep yourself physically fit. For keeping yourself physically fit you need to

    • Exercise regularly
    • Eat healthy

Therefore these two terms go side by side because you can’t stay healthy if your mind is not fit and if you feel depressed and low you will never feel like exercising. So, proper balance between the two is must for a happy and youthful life.

    2) “Mens sana in corpore sano”

Look at me getting all fancy with the Latin –
actually it’s a phrase we’ve all heard: “A sound mind in a healthy body.”

Originally written by the Roman poet
Juvenal, it was meant to make sure we kept our priorities straight.

But in the modern world we often neglect our bodies, eating bad food and not exercising.

Science backs Juvenal up. In fact,
research shows having a healthy body is an essential part of having a sound mind.

    Want to get smarter? Exercise.

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain:

“One of the prominent features of exercise, which is sometimes not appreciated in studies, is an improvement in the rate of learning, and I think that’s a really cool take-home message,” Cotman says. “Because it suggests that if you’re in good shape, you may be able to learn and function more efficiently.”

    How about happiness?
Research from Duke University shows exercise is as effective as antidepressants in treating depression.

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain:

In a landmark study affectionately called SMILE (Standard Medical Intervention and Long-term Exercise), James Blumenthal and his colleagues pitted exercise against the SSRI sertraline (Zoloft) in a sixteen-week trial… Blumenthal concluded that exercise was as effective as medication.

What’s truly amazing is that exercise can help you totally overhaul your life.

    Working out is what
Charles Duhigg calls a “keystone habit.”

It’s a habit that research shows leads people to create other, often unrelated, good habits:

When people start habitually exercising, even as infrequently as once a week, they start changing other, unrelated patterns in their lives, often unknowingly. Typically, people who exercise start eating better and becoming more productive at work. They smoke less and show more patience with colleagues and family. They use their credit cards less frequently and say they feel less stressed. It’s not completely clear why. But for many people, exercise is a keystone habit that triggers widespread change. “Exercise spills over,” said James Prochaska, a University of Rhode Island researcher. “There’s something about it that makes other good habits easier.”

7 Ancient Ideas That Will Improve Your Modern Life

    Both are extremely important.

However, your mind controls your thoughts and essentially your life so it is crucial to make sure you have your mind in check first. Most people fixate on their outer appearance and do not take the time to really work on their mental and emotion health.

Once you have a healthy mind, it makes obtaining a healthy body so much easier.

Many people workout and have amazing bodies but are miserable inside. I personally used to be this way. I remember a time in college when I was OBSESSED with being as ripped as possible.

I even remember thinking to myself, “I’ll be happy and have fun once I reach my goal. But for now, I just need to keep focusing on it.”

Well eventually, I got to the point where my body looked even better than I had ever imagined it could.

The problem was I wasn’t happy. I then set my next goal and thought to myself, “I’ll be happy and have fun once I reach this next goal.”

This led me to start focusing on building my mental and emotional fitness and once I did my life COMPLETELY transformed for the better.

I highly recommend checking out this article for things to avoid when you are trying to increase your mental and physical fitness.

To be totally honest, you cannot separate one from the other, simply because they are interdependent.

To have a healthy mind, it requires a constant flow of oxygen to enable the mind/brain to exist and thrive in peak condition.

However if you have an unhealthy body, one of the first things that suffers are your red-blood cells … and they are the ones responsible for carrying and delivering oxygen to all the parts of your body.

This is particularly the case where obesity means excessive blood-sugar levels and the pancreas fails to do provide enough insulin to regulate that blood sugar level. When that happens your red blood cells become coated in the residue of the sugar in your bloods which restricts them from absorbing the oxygen and delivering it to the various organs – including the brain.

One of the very common symptoms of this that I experienced before I made the change to a healthier lifestyle, was falling asleep after a meal. This is occurs when your brain becomes deprived of the oxygen it needs and literally starts to shut down.

After I made the dramatic change – eating the natural foods my body was designed to absorb and process, and exercising on a regular daily basis, I noticed within a short period of time that I became much more alert.

Interestingly enough, volumes of research have appeared demonstrating the link between eating correctly and regular exercise, and having a significantly positive impact on depression and mental health.

Rheumatoid arthritis signs some may wish they saw earlier.

Rheumatoid arthritis may appear in ways that you never thought were possible. Look for symptoms here.

That’s a very difficult question to answer because there are so many variables and inter-relationships, including the age of the person concerned, so I can only answer subjectively.

They’re both of great importance of course, but my own is that for someone in the earlier stages of their life, a healthy body is more important, since there’s so much to see and do in the world, and physical health limitations would restrict much of that. However as you get older and have experienced far more of what life has to offer in a physical sense, having a healthy, and enquiring, mind is probably the more important of the two.

Of course other people might well see things the other way round…

A healthy mind leads to a healthy body. A healthy body also leads to a healthy mind. What we think directly affects our physiology. Science has proven the impact of negative thoughts on our hormones and the cascade of chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline along with many others such as our endocrine system. What we eat directly affects our cells and our brain. How we take care of our body in the way of physical exercise affects our well being, our heart, our emotions and a great deal more. I’m a huge believer in the power of our mind being of the utmost importance as, even if we aren’t physically well, we have the power inside to change it. I know I did.

As the mind is generated by the body, one would think that the healthy body would be the answer, but it’s more complicated than that. The mind is the dance of behaviors on the brain and seems indelibly tied to it, so we should expect an unhealthy brain to lead to all sorts of bad things, and this obviously happens. But the cool thing is that the brain can remake itself and the body, as well.

Think about that: we can think about being different and then become different. Just by thinking (and then acting, too, obviously)! Of course, you have to think about it first, so it’s a complicated loop.

    A healthy mind.

Most of the people’s body does not say to them, hey be happy or hey be unhappy. The only time your body makes you unhappy is when your body gives you pain.

As for the mind, the mind loves to play tricks. It is the mind that says, hey let’s compare you to that person or that other person. It is the mind that challenges you.

Your mind will tend to bother you to see if you’re happy, but your body mostly does not. Therefore, once you conquer the mind, you’ll have conquer your main source of unhappiness

    A very good question ..

body and mind are intertwined and cannot be addressed separately..you can’t see in isolation.. all the repetition I made only to re-emphasize that healthy body leads to healthy mind and healthy mind leads to healthy body ….for example your body is aching suffering how the mind would be? The Mind would be irritating… will not proact but react adding more chaos to the existing turmoil vice versa…if the mind is not very healthy it will try to take things that are not good for health… so you can’t see two.. see one as holistically..let the rhythm be healthy body healthy mind or healthy mind healthy body
