Odd question. Are you asking about the issuer of the card (bank/institution name) or the type (VISA, MasterCard, etc.)? Some credit/debit cards even allow customizing them with pictures.

A card name on a debit card is the name registered as part of the billing address on a debit card and this name is usually the name of the owner of the account to which the debit card belongs to. Some card companies may allow for nicknames or any other custom names to be used on the debit card.

Some apps ask you to give each credit card a unique nickname when you first enter them into the app in order for you to have a simple means to recall or select them later without having to know the actual card number. For example, PenFed-Debit, USAA-Credit2, etc.

Caveat: this is pretty much a logical/typical stab in the dark as every app performs exclusively as its designer programmed it to perform. Check your app’s FAQ or email tech support for your best answer. 😉

In some cases you can ask for an extra card to be sent in whatever name you choose. We did this with American Express before my name was legally changed. The assumption generally is that you are giving it to whoever is named on the card for their use and you are the responsible party for the account, however, in many cases people have gotten super hero names on their cards. I even remember one bank advertising that as an option and a friend of mine took advantage of it.

Based on personal experience I would recommend that you carry a card that matches your ID for that one in a thousand merchant that checks against ID and if they question why you have a card with someone else’s name on it you can say they left it laying out and you picked it up or something. In a pinch you can even show them that the account numbers are very close (they will be) so they can be at ease that it’s the same account. Or if you’re brave enough you could just outright tell them that you’re working on getting your name changed and the bank is more willing than the government to accommodate your needs.

As a note, when I used to work in a deli I was that one weird person who checked signatures. I wouldn’t have bothered if I hadn’t been explicitly told it was part of my job duties, but I was. If the signature was missing from the back of the card I asked for ID. I don’t know if it will help at all, but it would have gotten past me; sign the back of your card. In spite of what another answer says, I would never have held or cut up a card even if I was instructed to, that’s just too embarrassing to customers who really don’t deserve it. I have never seen it happen anywhere but TV and movies. At worst, they just tend to ask for another form of payment, such as another credit card, in your legal name, or cash. But at least online purchases don’t have this problem.
