What happens if you swallow paper?

  • Depends on how much, what kind and for how long.

Did that as a dare when I was 8 years old. I ate tissue paper, some pieces of test papers, pad papers, notebook papers, and even bond papers. I never ate colored paper or art paper because the fear of having colored insides (and poop) kept me out of it.

Anyway, the worst I got was lots of shits. Paper is fiber plus some ink if you ate the ones with lines. There’s a chance I ate some bleaching agent (like titanium dioxide), but they’re often used, regulated, and considered food grade in miniscule amounts.

I didn’t have diarrhea, mind you. I also didn’t get indigestion as stomach acids can melt tougher objects. It just felt like I had a full stomach and a little bloated. So yeah, my shit weren’t weird or anything, just a lot more than usual if I remember those days right.

It doesn’t have any real purpose aside from comedic effect or for proving you’re a real man in my case. While it’s not as fatal as eating Tide Pods, you really shouldn’t do it…unless you want to try the whole “dog ate my homework” story except without a dog.

First of all, I want to know why do you want to eat paper?

No, like seriously I want to know when we are gifted with so many eatables by Mother Nature. Okay, so coming back to your question.

Xylophagia is a condition involving the consumption of paper and form of eating disorder known as pica. People who suffer from this eating disorder usually consume substances like paper, pencils, tree barks or other items made of wood. The most popular form of xylophagia is the consumption of paper.

Paper is made of cellulose which cannot be digested by our body so our gut will not know what to do with it.

Paper won’t kill you, but it may make you sick and or cause serious health problems because while you are eating the paper you are consuming the ink, diseases, and germs that it has accumulated by sitting there.

Speaking from personal experience, it depends on how much, the type of paper, and how well you chew.

You can get away with eating small amounts of paper (post-it notes, scraps from a class note passed that you don’t want anybody to find, bits of notebook paper) without any ill effect.

But, on a dare one summer, I ate an entire sheet of construction paper, one small piece at a time, chewing thoroughly, and allowing each piece to be well soaked in saliva (which aided the chewing). My stomach was upset after that, but I didn’t throw up, and didn’t notice any … irregularities of digestion after that point. I would not do that again, if possible.

In general, paper is made of recombined cellulose fibers, which are not digestible by humans. It will pass through relatively easily, as long as you mechanically break it up into small enough pieces.

You would likely pass the paper in your feces if you eat it. People with a chronic problem may cause intestinal blockage.

The paper contains dioxin. Dioxin is a carcinogen and toxic. It is not considered hazardous to touch the paper, but it is possible that dioxins are absorbed into the body. It would be too risky. Use unbleached paper.

The paper shouldn’t be ingested in large quantities of many chemicals. Products can include dyes, chalk, and finishes. Paper products may contain softeners, dyes, and other pigments. Having fiber is better than only having food.

Paper is, largely, wood pulp, so eating a small amount of it wouldn’t have any impact on your bodily system or health. However, there are two considerations if the consumption is beyond “small amounts.”

First, wood pulp is high in fiber, so large quantities could have serious impacts on your digestion. It would be like taking something like Metamucil to the extreme.

Second, many paper products are bleached to make them white, which means there are a lot of harmful chemicals bound up in the paper. Again, in small quantities, these are probably not harmful, but in large quantities they could be harmful.

At the end of the day, eating a small amount of paper would probably not be harmful, but a large quantity could cause some health issues. If you seem compelled to eat paper or the like, I’d suggest you talk to a health professional about that as you might have a disorder such as Pica, which a doctor can work with you to treat.

It will be passed in stools un-digested. Paper is basically fibrous collagen or the plant sclerenchyme, which cannot be digested in the human alimentary tract. And in the long run, eating paper can lead to undernutrition and cachexia.

Urge to eat non-edible substances like paper, chalk, paint, mud etc. may be due to iron deficiency in body. Eating paper and tissue paper can lead to gastrointestinal upset like abdominal pain, bloating etc. Thus, you are advised to discontinue eating of paper and tissue.

In addition, you are also advised to get a complete hemogram done to look for hemoglobin, red blood cell count and hematocrit. In case deficiency is detected, iron supplements will be required.

Paper is made of wood pulp or plant fibres usually, and in the food industry that sort of stuff is commonly known as cellulose. It adds thickening and bulking into foods and makes them appear more substantial without extra cost (or calories!), it’s flavourless, it’s totally legal and it doesn’t poison the consumer. It just fills you up with fibrous mush that works it’s way through your system. Fibre is an important part of the diet anyway, so that’s a plus.

Obviously, it provides no nutritional benefit and if you’re eating paper it may have unknown inks or coatings on it so… you’re unlikely to die but don’t overdo the paper munching.

It hardly ever does because people don’t eat it in large quantities. If you ate too much, yes it would make you sick. The first effect would probably be a bellyache. If you have been eating paper you should stop.
