Jugulodigastric is a Superior deep cervical lymph node and it generally drains oropharynx, cheek, part of lip.
Jugulodigastric lymph now lies behind the angle of the mandible, where posterior belly of digastric muscle is crossed superficially by internal jugular vein.
It can be swollen under following conditions –
1) Infections – Tonsillitis, Tonsillar abscess, Adenoiditis, Pharyngitis, dental infections and other infections of lip, cheek. Unusual conditions like in HIV, TB
2) Malignancy – Hodgkins lymphoma
3) Metastasis from other organs specifically from Head and neck area
Jugulo-digastric lymph nodes remain in deep cervical group of lymph nodes (Level 1B), lying behind mandible and below posterior belly of digastric muscle. It will be swollen in any pathology concerning the location it drains pipes.
- tonsillar absecess
- infections of cheek, lateral parts of lips
- infections of lips, teeth and gums.
- infections of vocal cords- adenoids, pharyngitis, absecess
- infections of submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
- cervical absecess
- Cancer of nasopharynx
any head neck thorax malignancy or sub scientific or moderate infections of head neck, tonsils or nasal cavity might trigger swollen jugulodigastric lymph nodes.

A soft tissue viewpoint: A head forward posture can/will worsen stress in the SCM muscle (Sternocleidomastoid). A MTrP (Myofascial Trigger point) will lock the pattern in place. The JD node is basically deep to this muscle and is responsive to stress levels in the soft tissue. As the JD node ends up being swollen/irritated it will transfer that tension to the fascia and back to the SCM producing a circular effect. Tension in SCM will translate to the node( s) down line to the JD node, blocking the whole line. Clog at this moment will “backup drain” from the lymph system up line. Thus it will demand rerouting to secondary lines of drain ie the throat.By passing this portion of the body immune system with potential irritants and pathogens. The most common example of this is a persistent sore throat, or a prewarning of a cold.
Strep throat and mononucleosis also commonly produce swollen nodes Both bacterial and viral infections can cause lymph nodes to swell, and it doesn’t have to be an upper respiratory infection– ear infections, skin and injury infections, and tooth abscesses are all common infections causing inflamed lymph nodes
This is hard as there are several causes. If you have significant pain, fever or feel unhealthy you should see a physician.
The most common is viral infections which do not respond to treatment and bacterial infections which may gain from prescription antibiotics (though there is a significant quantity of doubt about the advantage of these most of the times)
In older people and cigarette smokers if the node continues for a few weeks (the specific time will depend on a lot of factors) then it requires urgent investigation.
There are no natural home remedy of value for this, though if you have a sore throat you can try the typical pharmacy remedies.
My personal preference for aching throat is a small amount of lemon, a good glob of honey, warm water and a big slug of whisky. Obviously this has more side effects than a Strepsil but it makes me feel better.
A2A, but I’m hesitant to perform medical consults on quora because there’s a huge absence of info, most significantly. I concur with the other respondents in that a swollen lymph node might be absolutely benign, for example as a result of a mononucleosis infection. Sometimes a lymph node simply remains big, for no evident factor. The fact that yours is firm isn’t always worrisome either; it’s their regular consistency.
Some things for you to examine:
– If the node harms when you press it. If it does, it’s an excellent sign, although I understand the node being there currently for 1.5 month might have caused it to not injure anymore when pressing it.
– If the node increases in size
– Alarm signs are: loss of apetite, weight reduction, fever for no obvious reason, night sweats, discomfort in the lymph node when consuming liquors (I know it sounds weird, but it holds true)
And if you remain anxious, simply ask your medical professional to perform some fast blood tests, like a complete blood count and an erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
All the best!
If you are still finding inflamed nodes or swellings that are changing, even If you’ve had 2 ultrasounds and your doctor doesn’t appear worried, I personally would look for a consultation from a ENT Specialist (OTOLARYNGOLOGIST) ASAP.
Inflamed lymph nodes are one sign that your lymphatic system is working to rid your body of the responsible representatives.
Inflamed lymph glands in the head and neck are normally brought on by diseases such as:
- ear infection
- the cold or influenza
- sinus infection
- HIV infection
- contaminated tooth
- skin infection
- strep throat
More major conditions, such as immune system disorders or cancers, can trigger the lymph nodes throughout the body to swell. Immune system disorders that trigger the lymph nodes to swell include lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
As a nurse, it’s far from me to counter a medical professional’s experience and understanding. Personally I have actually lost a sibling in law to without treatment Lupus after months of examinations, tests and a final diagnosis which came too late for her. I do not suggest to alarm you as it may be absolutely nothing to stress about. However to reduce your mind( and mine) I would request an immediate referral to an ENT ASAP. If your insurance coverage requires a referral from your primary and he/she hesitates to provide you one, go to the ER. If a recommendation is not needed and he still will not, then make one yourself. Keep us notified. Finest dreams.
