    An adult generally sleeps for 6-8 hours a day. Your sign of excess sleep could be a problem, but at the same time, it could be normal too.

    Probable causes of excess sleep:

    1. Tired after a long day at work.
    2. Stress
    3. Ate a lot of food
    4. Thyroid problems
    5. Antihistamines (Medicines for allergies) or antibiotics (some cause drowsiness)
    6. Depression
    7. Frequent headaches, necessitating the need to sleep more.

    There are ways to cope this,

    1. Drink warm milk before sleep so you sleep well.
    2. If you’re too tired from work, take power naps in between.
    3. Avoid eating heavy just before sleep.
    4. If you’re under any medications, check the contents.
    5. If you snore a lot and get up frequently in between while sleeping due to difficulty in breathing consult a doctor for Obstructive sleep apnea.
    6. Visit a doctor : General Medicine(Allergic medications/Thyroid), psychiatry (Depression) and neurology (For migraines)

    I would check with a physician first. Sleeping 13 hours a night is not normal. Unless one drinks heavily the night before. I’d like to be able to sleep longer. When I’ve slept longer, like 10 to 12 hours, I’ve found I have some time of infection. One time it was where all my nasal cavities were infected (6) and required outpatient surgery. A few other times were due to tooth or gum infections. In other words, my body was sleeping longer in order to devote more time in fighting these infections. The only other thing that would contribute to such excessive hours of sleep might be depression. See your doctor first!

    Maybe you consult a doctor about that. It’s not normal. Here are few tips to get up early and keep awake:

    1. Start by reducing 1 hour of sleep either at night or in morning. But I will prefer you at morning.
    2. Eventually reduce the hours of sleep by half an hour. If you are unable to stay awake, do these tricks
    • Dip your head vertically in a bucket full of water. Try to stay underwater and look inside the water for 10 seconds. Cold water will be excellent.
    • After that stay away from any furniture around you and don’t sit anywhere. Just stand in middle of the room.
    • Preferably don’t switch on the fan/AC.
    • Drink hot coffee after that.



    Don’ts :

    • Don’t listen to silent or slow music.
    • If you are thinking of doing meditation, beware of not sleeping while eyes are closed.

    1. Have your thyroid checked. I know a lot of people say “I have thyroid issues” to cover a blanket of problems, but it can be entirely true. Now that it’s under control, I sleep normal hours.
    2. Evaluate yourself. Are you depressed? Depression can leave someone wanting to sleep all the time, not wanting to face the day.
    3. Try these 2 things and see if that helps, but you should see a Dr. right away and have some labs done. If insurance/money is an issue, try finding a Community Health Center. They can do a sliding scale or make payment arrangements.

    Either you must be in depression or lonely. figure out what is troubling you. It also might be due to stress and illness. Dont worry everything has a cure. you are trying to figure out the cause good effort. things will be better soon.

    I have the same problem for about 17 years now. I’m still tired after all that sleep and don’t have energy for much else. People don’t understand and they expect a lot more of me then I’m able to give, and they judge. I’d give anything to be able to sleep 8 hours a day like I did when I was young. I’m 52 years old, but I feel like I’m 80.

    I just found out about “long sleeping” which is a rare sleep disorder which only occurs in about 2 percent of the population. Long sleepers sleep 10–12 hours per day or more, some of them sleeping 14 hours a day or more. The longest I have ever slept was 20 hours straight.

    Good luck to you my friend. I’ve been to many doctors, but no one seems to be able to help. I thought I had chronic fatigue syndrome for the longest time, but apparently that group of tired people doesn’t sleep very well at all and they struggle with insomnia. Whatever is causing your sleep problems, I hope you find an answer. Good luck.
